McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Success at Johnson County Community College!

Professor and Department Chair Sheryl Hadley was concerned that exam scores in her Tuesday/Thursday classes were lower than in her Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes, although her lectures and course requirements were the same. She decided to pilot a program using Connect® Economics to give Tuesday/Thursday students additional engagement with course content over their long weekends. She found that not only did the Tuesday/Thursday exam scores rise to the level of the Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes, they surpassed them by margins of as many as 8.4 points! “I was impressed! On the very first exam, students in the Tuesday/Thursday class scored an average of 7% higher than students in the Monday/Wednesday/Friday class! I didn’t modify what I did in the classroom. I simply added the homework assignments.”

Professor Hadley was so pleased with the results of the pilot that she’s using Connect Economics in all of her classes—both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics—this semester. Learn more about Professor Hadley’s experience with McGraw-Hill Connect through this CASE STUDY.

McGraw-Hill Connect Boosts Student Performance at State College of Florida!

Professor Cheri Kittrell was looking for a digital solution that would help reinforce course concepts without adding to her grading workload. She began using Connect® Psychology in Fall 2009, anticipating that it would provide interactive content designed for diverse learning styles, yet still be user-friendly enough not to intimidate students who had little experience with technology. She is seeing exactly the results she expected, as well as meeting her initial goals of reinforcing concepts for students. Read this CASE STUDY to learn more about how Connect has increased student grades, and improved Professor Kittrell’s ability to spend more valuable time with students.

Professor Kittrell reports that she has seen steady, measurable improvement in student grades from semester to semester using Connect Psychology. “Students love Connect. They always say that it is easy to use, that they love the content, and that it is improving their test grades.”

McGraw-Hill Connect Boosts Student Performance at West Virginia University!

Professor Ruiz Rosique needed to provide her students with additional practice through activities completed outside of class. The assignments in Connect® Spanish presented a wide variety of additional skills practice to serve this purpose. Being able to assign unique learning tools outside of class, such as the Mundo Interactivo and Tema activities, allowed her to effectively cover more course material while engaging students to interact more fully in the course content. As a result, homework activity increased significantly and the average quiz grade jumped ten points, from 76% to 86%. She also saw significant improvement in grade distribution. Read this CASE STUDY to learn more about her experience with Connect.

Professor Ruiz Rosique is pleased with how Connect Spanish has both saved her time and improved student performance. She plans to continue using Connect, integrating even more assignments and assignment types, and including modules from LearnSmart, the adaptive learning system available within Connect. “The great thing about Connect is that it lets students see their results immediately,” she says. “This keeps students informed about their performance and helps me, as a teacher, to reinforce that feedback and talk to students in person about what they are doing right and which problems they should work on.”

  • ● Significant improvements in pass rates (average of 12.5 percentage points) and in retention rates (average of 10.5 percentage points)
  • ● More B students improving their learning and earning A’s; and more C students getting B’s
  • ● Students, on average, performing 10.24 points higher on all exams as compared to those who did not use LearnSmart

Faculty at these institutions love the way LearnSmart engages their students and improves outcomes.

Connect with LearnSmart has helped engage the learner in a way I didn’t think was possible. It has also helped me to be a more reflective teacher and pinpoint class issues with a topic.”
