McGraw-Hill Connect Saves Instructor Time and Increases Efficiency at Bryant University!

Professor Sam Mirmirani needed to free up the considerable amount of time he was spending grading homework exercises and reviewing assignments. He also wanted his students to take on more responsibility for completing homework, while providing them with a resource to review for exams rather than take up valuable class time for review prior to the midterm and final. By implementing Connect® Economics, Professor Mirmirani has shaved his grading time from 10 hours per week to one hour per week, and his students have ample review opportunities to prepare for exams on their own. Now, Mirmirani reports, he sees far less traffic during his office hours and when students do come to his office, they know exactly what they need help with based on the feedback they receive from Connect.

He says, “With Connect, I now have more frequent and systematic information on how my students are doing. This enables me to re-assess and revise my lectures. I now know which areas to emphasize more and which ones less.” Learn more about Professor Mirmirani’s experience with Connect Economics in this CASE STUDY.

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Grades and Pass Rates at California State University!

Professor Thomas Norman teaches an online Management Theory course at California State University. He recognized that students who had read and studied chapter assignments before scheduled class meetings were generally more successful in the course than students who had not, so he searched for a comprehensive course solution to improve the level of student preparation, and as a result, student academic success in the course. Upon implementing Connect® Management, Professor Norman saw dramatic improvement. Previously, only two or three of his students had read the material before class meetings, but with Connect, he found that only two or three students had not read the material! He also saw a significant improvement in student success, with pass rates increasing from 73% to 80%. For more details about Professor Norman’s experience, read this CASE STUDY.

Professor Norman says, “Connect Management will improve student learning and save you time. Students need the instant feedback that Connect provides.”  He plans to continue to expand the use of Connect within his courses and recommends it to other faculty.

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Performance and Retention at the University of Alabama!

Professor Lisa McKinney wanted to maximize her course lecture time without spending time on repetitive problems demonstrating lower-level concepts and reviewing homework. Professor McKinney and her colleagues decided to implement Connect Accounting as a way to ensure students learned this critical material outside of class. Faculty realized quickly that that students preferred Connect Accounting, which offered greater awareness of required homework assignments leading to students spending more time working on problems outside of course lectures and increasing quiz and exam averages and most of all pass rates!

“I feel that learning is higher because of the additional practice. Students in the lower and middle percentiles of the class are doing better because of the repetition and drilling provided through Connect.”

Case Study Graph

In addition to the increase in student grades, Professor McKinney has found that attendance and retention rates have also risen since implementing Connect Accounting.

“Class attendance has gone up since we began using Connect Accounting, because students are responsible for a challenging homework assignment each week. Prior to using Connect, attendance for my sections was 75%. Since using Connect, attendance has increased to 90% or more. Connect Accounting keeps students in class each week because they want to know how to successfully complete the assignments.”

Professor McKinney “absolutely” plans to continue using Connect Accounting, and will recommend it to other faculty members. The time savings that Connect offers through auto-grading assignments and reinforcing key course concepts has enabled Professor McKinney to cover a wider variety of content and problems, making the course now more comprehensive for students. Professor McKinney and her colleagues were also pleased with the tangible results in a number of course success metrics across multiple sections.

McGraw-Hill Connect Boosts Student Performance at Bunker Hill Community College!

Professor Bill Hoover wanted to standardize course content across multiple sections being taught by various instructors to deliver effective content regardless of learning styles. Connect® Anatomy and Physiology allowed him to synchronize assignments and assessments, minimize start-up time for new instructors, and offer engaging student materials. Read this CASE STUDY to learn how implementing Connect yielded dramatic 10-15% increases in student performance.

Professor Hoover’s students are also required to complete the LearnSmart adaptive learning modules before lecture, and are encouraged to view recorded lectures through Tegrity, an automated lecture capture service in Connect. He reports that his students love using LearnSmart and say that it makes it easy to come to class prepared, allowing for more discussion and participation during class.

Professor Hoover says, “I had students who were consistently scoring in the low 60’s on each of the weekly quizzes. Once I started assigning homework through Connect, those same students started earning scores in the high 70’s! On average, my students’ performance has risen by 10-15%.”

McGraw-Hill Connect with LearnSmart Improves Student Success and Engagement at the University of Colorado Denver!

Professor Joy Berrenberg, of the University of Colorado at Denver, needed a way to ensure that the students in her psychology course were familiar with the textbook material prior to lecture. She began using Connect Psychology and found that not only did it solve the problem, but it also freed up her time in class.

“Connect Psychology enabled me to spend more lecture time on more advanced material and examples rather than spending so much time on getting through basic concepts,” she says.

Professor Berrenberg also found that students using Connect Psychology did much better in the course than students who had not. She attributes this, in part, to the use of McGraw-Hill LearnSmart, the adaptive study tool within Connect that is designed to help students learn faster, study more efficiently, and retain more knowledge for greater success.

“I loved the adaptive testing nature of LearnSmart,” she says. “I have always had problems getting the majority of students to read the text, and this system helps with that tremendously!”

Case Study Graph

Based on her positive experience and substantial results with Connect Psychology, Professor Berrenberg recommends it to other faculty and has decided to increase the number of Connect assignments she requires students to complete in upcoming terms!

McGraw-Hill Connect Increases Student Performance and Engagement at San Diego State University!

Professor Lois Bitner Olson had been using a course management system to assign exercises that supported her lectures, but she was frustrated by the amount of time she was spending writing assignments and solving technical problems. She needed a solution that would help students learn to apply the marketing concepts she was teaching, and free her of time spent on solving technical glitches. Connect® Marketing not only addressed both of these needs, but also increased student final average grades by 5-7 points. Learn more about Professor Olson’s experience with Connect in this CASE STUDY.

Professor Olson says, “Connect has made my life easier and my students are doing better. They walk away knowing the concepts, not just learning them for the test. The Connect online exercises, drag and drop, video cases, etc. do a pretty good job of getting students to learn how to apply concepts. That was what first attracted me.”
