McGraw-Hill Connect Enhances Student Performance and Retention at Miami Dade College!

Professor Villar-Smith sought an engaging way to teach the grammar component outside of class so that she would have more time in class to focus on the writing process. In Summer 2009, she selected two six-week classes to test the effectiveness of Connect® Writing, using it for online grammar drill and practice in one class and teaching the grammar component traditionally in the other class. The results were remarkable: final passing scores were 20% higher in the class that used Connect Writing, and this class had a 100% student retention rate. Read the CASE STUDY to learn more, and watch the Spotlight Video below to hear Professor Villar-Smith, her colleagues and her students talk about their experience.

“I expected higher passing rates on both the state exam and the departmental writing exam, and this is exactly what has occured,” she says. “Connect Writing makes the teaching of the process of writing less stressful. It has opened up more free time for me to dedicate to student writing.”

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Grades and Pass Rates at Virginia Tech!

Professor Amy Smith used Connect® Personal Health to convert her face-to-face course to an online, asynchronous course in Spring 2010. She found it to be a perfect solution for teaching her large enrollment classes of up to 700 students, and her students have shown significant improvement as a result. Read this CASE STUDY to learn about the 12% increase in exam scores and a 14% increase in pass rates that Professor Smith’s students experienced with Connect!

Professor Smith says that Connect has been a win-win for everyone and would recommend it to other faculty. “It allows me to offer this elective class to about 600 students per semester and 50 during each summer session. It gives the students the opportunity for self-study, and I am there to answer questions about the material and the process. Without Connect, we could not offer the class to this number of students. It’s a popular class at Virginia Tech.” She now plans to use more of the available features in Connect, such as Tegrity lecture capture to integrate recorded lectures into her next offering of Personal Health.

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Grades and Pass Rates at Front Range Community College!

Professor Anita Miller felt that her students taking Human Anatomy & Physiology were not spending enough time practicing or reviewing anatomical concepts outside of class. She was looking for a solution that would provide them with opportunities to practice on their own and motivate them to do more. Read this CASE STUDY to learn about how Connect® Anatomy & Physiology enabled her to post required assignments and additional practice opportunities for her students, all with instant feedback and automated grading. As a result, more students are earning A’s and B’s and fewer students are earning C’s and F’s! Pass rates for her course have also increased 11%, from 75% to 86% – the highest passing rate for the course that she has ever seen.

Professor Miller reports, “With exams, the overall increase in grades is obvious for the class using Connect. With the practical assessments, improvement is also visible. The high level of performance for students with an A shows that the good students know what to study for exams, whereas the lower achievers need more help, which Connect provides them.” As a result of these improved student outcomes, Professor Miller looks forward to further integrating more of the exercises and animations within Connect into her curriculum.

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Success at Solano Community College!

Professor Laura Maghoney sought to help her students develop a deeper understanding of economics principles through increased retention of key course concepts. She turned to Connect® Economics, with its embedded graphing tool and interactive assignments, which helped her to accomplish this goal and significantly improved student performance in the course. Read this CASE STUDY for more information on the improved outcomes that Professor Maghoney and her students experience with Connect.

Professor Maghoney found that Connect also enabled her to use the time she saved on grading assignments to prepare for high-level interactive discussions during class. She says,” “I want students to be able to apply what they have learned to the ‘real world.’ With Connect, the students definitely seem to understand economics better, so that helps them make that leap to the real world. They have a stronger grasp of how events might be related to each other.”

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Grades at Washtenaw Community College!

Professor Robert Hagood knows the value of practice problems in his course, but felt limited in the amount of homework he could assign due to the time it took to manually grade and review it in class. He found that Connect® Physics enabled him to assign a sufficient number of practice problems for students without adding to his grading time or using valuable class time to review. Not only do his students now get immediate feedback on their homework, but Professor Hagood is able to monitor individual student progress, as well as focus on areas of difficulty for entire classes. Read this CASE STUDY to learn how implementing Connect Physics led to a noticeable increase in student engagement and academic performance.
