McGraw-Hill Connect Increases Grades and Retention at San Jacinto College!

Professor Julie Williams teaches both face-to-face and online public speaking classes, and needed a solution that would support both types of courses. Previously, she had videotaped each student’s speech and provided DVDs for self-assessment in her face-to-face classes, which was time-intensive. With Connect® Lucas, she has recovered 50 hours per semester by uploading the videos into Connect for student self-assessment. She also has one place for her online students to upload their videos for grading and feedback, self-evaluation, and peer review. In addition, she reports increased student engagement and significantly higher pass rates than the departmental average since implementing Connect Lucas. Learn about Professor Williams’ experience in this CASE STUDY.

In addition to the positive impact on student performance, Connect Lucas has enabled Professor Williams to decrease the number of printed handouts and worksheets she provides to students by 1,000, resulting in actual departmental cost savings of approximately $300 per semester!

Professor Williams says, “Connect Lucas is a tool that enables faculty to effectively teach the concepts of public speaking, coach students through the learning process, manage classroom activities and assignments, and measure the outcomes of student success. I have made Connect a course requirement that all my students must have for my public speaking classes. So much of their grade will eventually depend on tools and features that they can only access through Connect, and it would be difficult for students to pass my course without it.”

McGraw-Hill Connect Improves Student Success and Increases Engagement at Florida State College!

Professor Elizabeth Tuckwiller needed to find a way to engage student interest in learning psychology outside of the classroom to reduce the time spent in lecture trying to cover every topic in the course. Read this CASE STUDY on how McGraw-Hill LearnSmart, the adaptive learning system within Connect® Psychology, has helped her students to learn core course content outside of class. Now students experience the major concepts of the course through online labs and activities, and as a result, Professor Tuckwiller has time to bring more dynamic, engaging activities and videos from Connect into her classroom. And it is working—students are spending much more time with the material and pass rates have leaped from 75% to 83.6%.

She says, “Connect Psychology drastically improves student engagement, and it is the next wave in digital learning and blended course development. It frees up class time for labs, activities and other forms of active learning. I am very, very pleased with it.”

Professor Tuckwiller recommends Connect to faculty and now plans to use the McGraw-Hill and Blackboard total course solution to seamlessly deliver her course in one place.

McGraw-Hill Connect Increases Instructor Efficiency and Student Engagement at Pace University!

An important goal for Pace University has been to offer all of its core courses online, and in 2009, Public Speaking was one of two remaining courses that needed to be modified in order to meet this goal. Professor Maria Luskay was able to change that by creating a comprehensive online course with the tools she found in Connect® Lucas and making the online section just as academically rigorous as the face-to-face course. Read this CASE STUDY to learn how her course became a successful model that was presented to the institution’s Board of Trustees for what online teaching and learning can be.

“Connect is an excellent resource,” Professor Luskay says. “It changes the entire learning process. Students are already online all the time, and with this, they have so many resources at their fingertips that they haven’t had before.” Demand for the online Public Speaking course at Pace University is growing, so they will be offering additional sections with Connect.
